Local Outdoor Adventures for Families Maple Valley Area

Check back often—we’re building a growing, easy-to-search database of local hikes, playgrounds, must-see spots, and trails to help you plan your next adventure with ease.

Black Diamond Open Space | Rock'N'Roll Trail

The Black Diamond Open space consists of 1,240 forested acres, including wetlands, peat bogs, streams, and portions of the protected migratory corridor known as the Wildlife Habitat Network. Explore the 17 miles of non-motorized trails. The Rock'n'Roll Trail itself is a little over half a mile long with minimal elevation change.

Please note that this area is primarily used by mountain bikers. Keep an eye out for them and be sure to give them the right of way. (While bikers usually yield to hikers on most trails, signs here indicate the opposite.)

Squak Valley Playground

Squak Valley Park in Issaquah, WA, offers a well-maintained playground with separate areas for younger and older kids, including an impressive three-story play structure and swings. The park also features wide open grassy fields perfect for running or soccer, picnic spots, vault toilets, and convenient parking. Nestled near Squak Mountain, it’s a peaceful place to play—and just a few minutes from downtown Issaquah if you want to add lunch or a coffee to your adventure.

Landsburg Park

Gravel parking lot off of Landsburg Road across from the Cedar River Trail Access. One of our favorite places to spend a hot summer day! A sandy beach, beautiful driftwood, and countless smooth river rocks make this a paradise for little explorers.

If you're looking for a little adventure, bring an inflatable tube or floatie and enjoy drifting along the slow-moving section of the Cedar River. Just remember that the main current is deeper than it looks and the water stays refreshingly cold all summer, so life jackets are highly recommended.

River Splash Spot

Belmondo's Reach | Cedar River

This peaceful riverside spot feels tucked away despite being so close to town. Kids love climbing the large riverside rocks, digging in the sand, and wandering the little trails nearby.

Later in the summer, you may even find ripe blackberries along the paths. Bring a picnic or a couple of camping chairs and enjoy the beautiful river & standstone cliff views. This beach is a perfect spot to see Salmon Spawning in the fall.
